Program Description
This two-day, intermediate-level continuing education activity will enhance professional competence in trauma-informed psychological assessment and intervention across the lifespan. The program will be grounded in established psychological theory, contemporary peer-reviewed empirical research, Trauma-Informed Care and applicable professional standards of practice.
Instruction will include an evidence-informed review of trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, consistent with the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and the standard eight-phase EMDR protocol. Participants will examine how trauma-informed principles will guide clinical assessment, differential diagnosis, case conceptualization, treatment planning, stabilization, trauma processing, and integration.
The program will address trauma across developmental stages and diverse populations, including children, adolescents, adults, neurodivergent individuals, and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
Day One, led by Dr. Linda Timme, will focus on evidence-based trauma treatment considerations for neurodivergent populations. Instruction will emphasize EMDR and CBT applications, diagnostic clarification, clinical adaptations, and ethical risk management. Somatic and sensory-informed regulation strategies will be presented as adjunctive stabilization supports and not as independently validated trauma-processing interventions.
Day Two, led by Dr. Rocío Hernández, will expand the framework to childhood trauma and its developmental, neurobiological, and relational implications. This session will integrate developmental neuroscience, EMDR therapy applications, and Polyvagal-informed regulation concepts within trauma-focused treatment planning.
Across both instructional days, the program will distinguish between well-established, probably efficacious, and emerging interventions in accordance with contemporary standards for evaluating levels of evidence in psychological science and trauma-informed care.
Ethical and professional practice considerations, including informed consent, mandated reporting, documentation standards, cultural humility, clinician competence, and adherence to scope-of-practice boundaries—will be integrated throughout the activity.
The activity will include discussion of potential risks associated with trauma-focused interventions, including temporary symptom exacerbation, activation of dissociative symptoms, emotional distress, and short-term functional disruption. Instruction will emphasize readiness assessment, stabilization planning, monitoring of clinical status, and referral when indicated.
This activity is designed to maintain, develop, and enhance professional competence in trauma assessment and intervention consistent with current standards of care. Participation will not substitute for EMDRIA-approved basic training, formal certification, or supervised specialty credentialing in EMDR therapy. Disclosure of relevant financial relationships and commercial support, if applicable, will be provided prior to the start of the activity.
This activity provides an educational overview of EMDR-informed concepts and clinical decision-making. It does not constitute EMDR basic training, certification, or authorization to practice EMDR therapy beyond the participant’s level of formal training and professional scope of competence.

Summit Agenda
This program includes multiple instructors. Dr. Rocío Hernández, PhD, LPCC, LMFT will present Understanding Child Trauma for Grown-Ups. Dr. Linda Timme, DSW, MSW, LCSW, LCSW-C will present Integrated Trauma-Informed, EMDR, and Evidence-Based Approaches for Neurodiverse Adults and Individuals with IDD and will serve as program lead, facilitating integration of concepts and applied practice discussions across sessions.
