Program Description
EMDR & BEYOND: The Science of Connection A Continuing Education Program on Trauma-Informed Care for Youth, Adults, and Families is a 10.5-hour continuing education activity provides licensed psychologists and other doctoral- or master’s-level mental health professionals with an evidence-based review of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, and selected adjunctive somatic stabilization strategies within a trauma-informed clinical framework. The activity builds upon graduate-level training in psychopathology, psychological assessment, ethics, and evidence-based intervention and assumes foundational competence in diagnostic formulation, case conceptualization, and treatment planning.
Program content focuses on the application of psychological assessment and intervention methods grounded in established psychological theory, empirical research, and professional standards of practice. Content is derived from contemporary peer-reviewed scientific literature, including randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses examining the efficacy, mechanisms of action, and clinical outcomes associated with CBT and EMDR for trauma-related disorders across diverse populations.
Trauma-informed principles are examined as operationalized within established evidence-based treatment models and applied to trauma assessment procedures, differential diagnosis, stabilization planning, sequencing of trauma processing, monitoring of treatment response, and culturally responsive clinical decision-making across varied developmental and sociocultural contexts.
Empirically supported trauma treatments, including CBT-based trauma interventions and EMDR therapy utilizing the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and eight-phase protocol, discussed in accordance with current scientific literature and professional practice guidelines.
Neurodiversity-informed clinical adaptations, derived from emerging peer-reviewed empirical research and professional guidance related to trauma treatment in autistic individuals and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), with attention to accessibility, communication differences, and regulation needs.
Somatic- and Polyvagal-informed regulation strategies, presented as adjunctive stabilization approaches intended to enhance autonomic regulation, safety, and treatment engagement, and not as stand-alone, independently validated trauma-processing interventions.
Ethical considerations relevant to trauma treatment—including informed consent, documentation standards, mandated reporting obligations, cultural and developmental responsiveness, clinician competence, and adherence to professional scope of practice—are integrated throughout the activity. Disclosure of commercial support and relevant potential conflicts of interest is provided at the outset of the program.
Through structured didactic instruction and case-based clinical analysis, the activity examines trauma assessment, differential diagnosis, case conceptualization, stabilization planning, sequencing considerations in trauma processing, management of dissociation and affect dysregulation, comorbid mood and anxiety disorders, developmental trauma presentations, racial and identity-based trauma, and neurodevelopmental differences, including intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The presentations explicitly address the empirical support for major intervention approaches; the methodological strengths and limitations of the research literature; distinctions among well-established, probably efficacious, and emerging interventions consistent with contemporary standards for evaluating levels of evidence in psychological science; and areas in which evidence remains limited, preliminary, or evolving. Potential risks associated with trauma-focused interventions—including temporary symptom exacerbation, activation of dissociative symptoms, emotional destabilization, and short-term functional disruption—are examined within the context of informed consent procedures, ethical risk management, monitoring of clinical stability, and scope-of-practice considerations.
The program provides a conceptual and applied review of EMDR therapy consistent with current research literature and does not substitute for formal certification, supervised clinical training, or competency-based credentialing in specialized modalities, including EMDRIA-approved basic training requirements. Novel, experimental, or untested interventions are not presented as established or evidence-based treatments.
This activity is directly relevant to psychological practice and is designed to maintain, develop, and enhance professional competence in trauma assessment and intervention in alignment with current scientific evidence and standards of care.
